Ford Focus - General History and Information

The Ford Focus was originally launched in 1998 in Europe, launched in 2000 in North America and 2002 in Australia. Since its launch in 1998 the first generation Focus has won over 60 awards including 13 Car of the Year awards in both Europe and North America and, more recently, the best family car ever (Autocar UK 2003). The Focus was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for five consecutive years between 2000 and 2004. Motor Trend magazine had also given the Focus favorable reviews, writing comments like "As entry-level sedans go, few can touch Ford's Focus on the fun-to-drive front”.

North American Market

It was introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model year as a replacement for the Ford Escort and the Mercury Tracer. It received a revamp for the 2005 model year, and the second generation was introduced for the 2008 model year. Sales in the United States for calendar-year 2007 comprised 173,213 units making it the #3 best selling domestic nameplate car (behind the Chevrolet Impala and Cobalt), #9 best selling car of all cars and #16 best selling vehicle, according to Reuters Top-20 U.S. Sales Scorecard.

The first generation Focus was sold in sedan, 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, and wagon configurations. The second generation Focus was released in sedan and coupe versions, dropping the hatchback and wagon versions.

International Market

It was launched in 1998 in Europe and 2002 in Australia. Since then, it has become the United Kingdom's best selling car, following in the success of its predecessor, the Escort. In 2001 and 2002, the Focus was the world’s best selling car. A new version of the Focus (Mk II) was launched in Europe in January 2005 and a face lifted version in January 2008.

In Europe, South America and South Africa, the Focus replaced the Ford Escort. In Australia, New Zealand and Japan, it replaced the Ford Laser.

Focus Manufacturing

Presently, Ford uses the Wayne Stamping & Assembly facility for the manufacturing of the Focus. It is located in Wayne, Michigan. The other former facility is located in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The plant in Wayne currently builds all varieties of the car. The Mexican plant used to build the ZX3/ZX5/FocusSVT hatchbacks prior to consolidation of production in Michigan in 2006. That cleared the way to assemble the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ in Hermosillo.

Internationally, the Ford Focus is manufactured in Saarlouis, Germany; Setubal, Portugal; Valencia, Spain; Santa Rosa, Laguna, Philippines; General Pacheco, Argentina; Chongqing, China; Vsevolozhsk, Russia; Pretoria, South Africa; Chungli, Taiwan.

Focus Reliability

In the US spec models, despite a series of major recalls early in the car's life, reliability has steadily been improving. The Focus received a Consumers Digest Best Buy Rating for 2005, an award that takes numerous factors into consideration, including reliability and recall history, although Lemon-Aid still described it as "glitch ridden" up until at least 2004.

Focus Marketing

After 2005, the North American version was sold in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Latin American countries, while the newer European version was available in other worldwide markets. The European Focus II replaced the older model Focus in Mexico by early 2007. Unlike previous small Fords in the North American market, including the Pinto, the Escort, no Mercury version was sold.

Overall Sales and History

Despite its radical styling (the hatchback version in particular), and some controversial safety recalls in North America, the car has been a sales success across the globe, even in the United States, where Ford has traditionally failed to successfully sell its European models. It was elected Car of the Year in 1999. The Focus won the North American Car of the Year award for 2000.

The Focus, unlike the Escort, was never offered in a panel van body style in the U.S.; however, a commercial Focus is available in Europe.

The Focus was introduced in North America in 1999 as a 2000 model, initially as a 3-door hatchback (ZX3), 4 -door sedan (ZX4) and 5-door wagon (ZXW). A 5-door hatchback (ZX5) version was introduced for the 2002 model year.

The cars featured subtle styling differences from the European versions:

• The front and rear bumpers were larger, with a different design and had side markers.

• The grill housed the turn signals/running lights.

• The rear lights were a slightly different design with amber turn lights replaced with red.

• Headrests were not available for the rear seats even as an option, except for the SVT, although some models did have them (S2 Focus in 2001, and eventually added to later first generation models).

Changes for 2005 model year included a restyling that’s more in line with the corporate face, an updated interior, new stereos, and new model designations. The SVT is gone, replaced by the ZX4 ST; the Focus wagon is now the ZXW; and a new 136 horsepower, lower-emissions 2.0-litre replaces both the 110 hp and 130 hp 2.0-litre engines of 2004.

For the 2008 model year, the Focus was completely restyled, including Ford’s signature bar grill design. It was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. A 2-door coupe is offered for the first time in addition to a 4-door sedan. 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks as well as the wagon were dropped. The interior was drastically redesigned, implementing Ford’s “Ice Blue” lighting for the first time. It also featured a message center on the top of the dashboard, which displays radio information.
According to Design Head Lon Zaback, the new Focus "appears to be a little bit shorter and have shorter overhangs. It has a much more sporty appearance because of some of the proportional things we did with it.” New features include ambient lighting, new seats, brushed aluminum dashboards, and the new Ford Sync to integrate electronics into the automobile.

The Microsoft designed Sync technology allows Bluetooth connectivity with enabled phones, MP3 player hookups, and voice activation for both calling on Bluetooth synced phone as well as voice-activated browsing of media players, as well as other features for phone connectivity and will also be fully upgradable. Sync is optional equipment on the 2008 Focus SE with an MSRP of $395. It is standard equipment on the 2008 Focus SES.

Optional ambient lighting in the Focus uses LEDs placed in the front and rear foot wells and the cup holders. "The driver or front-seat passenger can choose from seven different colors - red, blue, aqua, purple, white, green and yellow - by cycling through a dash-mounted switch." Standard equipment will include a tire pressure monitoring system.

The 2.3 L Duratec engine is discontinued for the redesign, leaving only the 2.0 L Duratec 20 engine. Power is increased in the 2.0 L engine, up to 140 hp (104 kW) from 136 hp (101 kW), along with other changes to increase fuel efficiency. The chassis was lightened and stiffened and overall weight is decreased by 30 lbs from the previous model. Highway mileage is rated at 35 mpg using the new 2008 EPA standards.

Like many compact cars, demand for the Focus has increased because of high gasoline prices in 2008. The Focus currently takes 7.6 percent of the U.S. small car market. To meet this increasing demand, Ford increased output for 2008 by 30%.

Information - 2002 through 2004 SVT Focus

In late 2001, Ford's in-house performance group, known as Special Vehicle Team (SVT), introduced the SVT Focus, essentially a renamed European ST170 Focus, to the United States and Canadian markets for the 2002 model year. Ford billed the SVT Focus as the sportiest offering of the Focus to date. Cosmetically, the exterior included unique front and rear bumpers, side skirts, fog lamps, rear spoiler, rear diffuser and 17" alloy wheels wearing fairly sticky "Y" rated 215/45R17 tires from Continental. The car featured a thoroughly reworked version of the 2.0 liter Zetec engine available in other Focus models. Developed in concert with Cosworth, this engine featured many advanced technologies. Included were a special aluminum cylinder head with enlarged intake ports, high compression pistons and forged connecting rods, piston oil squirters, solenoid operated variable camshaft timing on the intake cam, dual stage intake manifold, and a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust header.

These additions, coupled with an increased 10.2:1 compression ratio, bumped horsepower from 130 to 170 while still achieving good fuel economy and low emissions. Ford went to German manufacturer Getrag to provide a six-speed manual transmission which is shared with the Mini Cooper S. This transmission was a twin layshaft design and included a dual mass flywheel to eliminate vibration. Other changes to complete the package included sharper steering through an increased boost ratio in the steering rack, larger disc brakes on all four corners and stiffened suspension with larger anti-roll bars. Inside the car was offered with several leather bits including seats, and steering wheel. The shifter knob, emergency-brake handle, and their respective boots are also in black leather. Options included a powered glass sunroof, 8 speaker Audiophile sound system with 8" sub-woofer, a cold weather package with heated seats, traction control, a 115V block heater, and heated side mirrors and, for 2003 and 2004 models, HID xenon headlamps.

In 2003 the SVT was offered in the 5-door bodystyle and an all new European Appearance Package for 3-doors only. It included all available options plus full leather Recaro seats and 15 spoke dark argent colored wheels. The exterior was available in two new colors, Screamin' Yellow and Competition Orange. The only option the 5-door did not include were the sideskirts. In 2004, its final year of production, the Euro package was available in the 5-door model as well. Also the 5 spoke wheels were no longer available and a 6 spoke design was the replacement.

Tuner Saleen modified the Mark II USA Focus into the S121 and N2O performance cars. The S121 includes a 150 hp (112 kW) Duratec 2.0l I4 engine with improved suspension, custom body kit, custom graphics, tire and wheel package, customized interior components, and optional upgraded brakes. The performance boost to the factory Duratec 2.0l I4 engine was achieved by replacing the factory paper air filter with a more freely flowing re-useable air cleaner and by replacing the restrictive factory exhaust with a cat back exhaust system. The N20 offers the same base engine and other improvements along with a factory installed nitrous oxide system that offers a 75 hp boost bringing the N2O to 225 hp The S121/N2O are sold as new at many Ford dealers. There were 200 S121/N2O's produced by Saleen in 2005.

The N20 Package includes the following extras/additions.

Saleen is primarily associated with its Mustang lineup, but the American tuner has been known to dabble in everything from mid-engine exotics to humble hatches. Back in 2004, they launched the N2O Focus, complete with a body kit, suspension upgrades, a sporty interior, and a 75-shot nitrous system (sorta). Saleen ended up selling only a handful of cars, and eventually resulted in a $700,000 fine from the California Air Resources Board for altering emissions control systems in the car. Despite the letdown of the N2O, Saleen is launching another version of the Focus, dubbed the RC2, under the budget-friendly Racecraft brand.

Based on the Ford Focus coupe, the RC2 features subtle exterior styling changes including a new front fascia, mesh grille, side skirts, rear spoiler, and 18-inch wheels. The suspension is upgraded with stiffer springs, shocks and larger sway bars, and larger brakes are fitted up front. Horsepower is bumped by approximately 15 with a dual-tipped exhaust system and cold air intake. Production will start in the first quarter of 2009 and will be relatively affordable at under $20,000. 2005-2007 ZX4 ST





Information - 2005 through 2007 Ford Focus ZX4 ST

The North American SVT Focus was discontinued in 2004. Its replacement is the ZX4 ST sedan, which has a 2.3 litre, 151 hp (113 kW) (154 ft-lb (209 N-m) (SAE) Torque) Duratec driving a 5 speed manual transmission (MTX-75 which is the same transmission as previously used with the 2000 on up Zetec engines except with a higher differential ratio) with reverse lock-out. While horsepower is down from the SVT acceleration is only slightly affected, due to the larger differential ratio. The 2005 ST had the same dampers and stabilizer bars that the SVT used, but with significantly softer springs. The ST has a unique interior and 16" wheels. It is also equipped with a spoiler, color-keyed fascia, and 4-wheel anti-lock disk brakes. Handling balance is roughly the same as that of the SVT but has a milder ride due to the softer springs and generates less grip due to the narrower 205/50R16 all season tires. The 2005 ST included everything from the SES package with additional options such as heated seats, heated mirrors, full leather interior, sun/moonroof, and the Audiophile package controlled by a Blaupunkt headunit. 2007 was the final year for the 2.3L engine in the Focus. For the 2006 and 2007 ST's the suspension geometry was changed in an effort to provide a softer ride.

In 2006, Ford introduced the Street Appearance Package to spice up the aging Ford Focus design. This included two unique front and rear fascia choices. The front fascia included integrated fog lamps and side markers while the rear offered a rear diffuser in addition to a large rally spoiler. This option was priced at $1295 U.S.D.


Ford Focus by Model Year (Changes, Additions, Etc.)

• 2000 Model Year - Introduction to the North American market. Ford's new subcompact offers three body styles, all with the company's "new-edge" styling. Focus comes as a 2-door hatchback in sporty ZX3 trim, a 4-door sedan in LX, SE, and top ZTS form, and as a 4-door SE wagon. A 110-horsepower 4-cylinder engine is standard in LX and SE models. Standard in ZTS and ZX3, optional for SE is a 130-hp twincam four. Both engines team with manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. Antilock brakes are standard on ZTS, optional on other models. Head/chest front side airbags are optional, and all models come with rear child-seat anchors. A Sony option package for SE sedans that includes a 460-watt audio system was added at midyear, as was a ZX3 Kona package with a mountain bike and rack and 16-inch wheels and tires.

• 2001 Model Year - This subcompact line offers 4-dr sedans, a 4-dr wagon, and a sporty 2-dr hatchback. All have a 4-cyl engine teamed with manual or automatic transmission. ABS is standard on the top-line ZTS sedan, optional on other Focus models. Head-and-torso front side airbags are optional. An antiskid system is optional on the ZTS and the ZX3 hatchback and includes rear disc brakes in place of drums. Street Edition option for SE sedans and wagons includes sport bucket seats, in-dash CD changer, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Due in early calendar '02 is the performance SVT Focus with 170 hp, 17-inch wheels, sport suspension. Release of the S2 Edition hatchback, first time Ford's "Liquid Grey" available on the Focus (only on the S2 Edition this year).

• 2002 Model Year - Ford's popular subcompact adds a new body style, a sport-trim wagon, and a sporty SVT variant for 2002. Focus comes as a 4-dr sedan, 4-dr wagon, and a 2 and 4-dr hatchback; the 4-dr hatchback is new for '02. All have a 4-cyl engine. It has 110 or 130 hp, depending on model, with the new SVT rated at 170 hp. The SVT comes only as a 2-dr hatchback and includes a sport suspension and 17-inch wheels. And a new ZTW wagon has standard leather upholstery, fog lights, and 16-inch wheels. The base sedan, base 2-dr hatchback, and SVT come only with manual transmission; other models are available with manual or automatic. ABS is standard on the SVT, optional on other Focus models. Head-and-torso front side airbags are optional on all but the SVT. Newly optional on higher-line models is an antiskid system that includes ABS and traction control. A sunroof and 6-disc in-dash CD player are other new options.

• 2003 Model Year - A second sport SVT variant and noise-reducing measures are 2003 additions for Ford's smallest car. Focus comes as a 4-dr sedan, 4-dr wagon, or as hatchback with two or four doors. All have a 4-cyl engine with 110 hp in the entry-level LX and SE sedans, 170 hp in SVTs, and 130 in other models. SVTs are hatchbacks with a sport suspension and 17-inch wheels; for '03, a 4-dr model joins the existing 2-dr version. LX sedans, the ZX3, and SVTs come only with manual transmission, wagons only with automatic. Other models are available with either transmission. ABS is standard on the SVT, optional on other Focus models. Head-and-torso front side airbags are optional on all but the SVT. Traction control is optional for higher-line models, some of which also offer Ford's AdvanceTrac antiskid system. Ford says increased sound-deadening measures make Focus quieter on the road. Newly available features include an MP3 player and heated front seats and mirrors. Other new options include high-intensity headlights for SVTs, a Centennial package for ZTS, and a European Appearance package for SVT.

• 2004 Model Year - Ford's smallest car adds an engine choice but loses its antiskid system for 2004. Focus comes as a 4-dr sedan, 4-dr wagon, or as a hatchback with two or four doors. All have a 4-cyl engine. A 2.0 liter with 110 or 130 hp is standard in most models. Newly available is a 145-hp 2.3 liter. All come with 5-speed manual and/or 4-speed automatic transmission, depending on model. The sporty SVT has a 170-hp 2.0 liter and 6-speed manual. ABS and head-and-torso front side airbags are standard on SVT, optional elsewhere. Other options include traction control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, sunroof, and, for SVTs, high-intensity headlights. No longer offered is Ford's AdvanceTrac antiskid system.

• 2005 Model Year - Redesigned inside and out, getting more power and revised styling. A front-wheel-drive compact, Focus came as a two-door hatchback called the ZX3, and with four doors as the ZX4 sedan, ZX5 hatchback, and ZXW wagon. All models had a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, except for the ZX4 ST version of the sedan, which used a 2.3-liter four-cylinder. The 2.3-liter delivered 151 horsepower, versus 145 in 2004 models. Others were rated 136 horsepower, up from 110 or 130 (depending on model) in 2004. The ZX4 ST replaced the sporty SVT hatchbacks and came with sport suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and mandatory manual transmission. The 2.0-liter engine could work with either a manual or automatic transmission. Wheel diameters were 16 inches for SES and ZX4 ST versions, but 15 inches elsewhere. Antilock braking was standard on the ZX4 ST, but optional otherwise. The ZX4 ST also came with traction control, which was optional on SE and SES trim levels. Head-and-torso front side airbags were optional on all models. Available features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Standard on all were a height-adjustable driver's seat, and split folding rear seatbacks.

• 2006 Model Year - Ford's smallest car comes as a 2-dr hatchback called the ZX3, and with four doors as the ZX4 sedan, ZX5 hatchback, and ZXW wagon. Price levels ascend through S, SE, SES, and ST designations. All have 4-cyl engines. The ST has 151 hp, the others have 136 hp. The sporty ZX3 S and ZX4 ST sedan are manual transmission only. Other models offer manual or automatic. The ST has a sport suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. It also includes ABS, which is optional on other models. Traction control is available for SE, SES, and ST versions. The Focus suspension setup was completely redesigned for this year, including a larger diameter strut, redesigned lower arm and front end springs. All Focuses include a height-adjustable driver seat and split folding rear seatbacks. Head-and-torso protecting front side airbags are available linewide. Other options include sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. New for 2006 is a Street Appearance Package for SE, SES, and ST models. It includes a rear spoiler and modified lower-body appearance, all in body color, plus fog lights and chrome exhaust tip.

The only engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a standard 5-speed manual transmission or optional automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Newly available is Ford's Sync. Sync provides voice control of certain cell phone and MP3 player functions. Sync is standard on SES and available on SE models. Also available are leather upholstery and remote engine start.

• 2009 Model Year - The 2009 Ford Focus coupe gets slightly freshened styling. Otherwise, this compact car lineup gets an available antiskid system as well as a revised model roster. Focus comes as a 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan. S, SE, SES, and new-for-2009 SEL trim levels are available. S and SEL are sedan only; the S coupe has been dropped. The only engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 140 hp in sedans and 143 hp in coupes. Both body styles offer a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, new-for-2009 antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Also available is Ford's Sync. Sync provides voice control of certain cell phone and MP3 player functions. Sync is standard on SES and SEL and available on SE. Focus Engines Specifications

• 2.0L CVH/SPI – 100hp (82kW) – 125lb-ft (169N-m)
  - Standard in LX and SE model sedans through 2004.
  
  The 2.0 was introduced in the 1997 Escort. It now used split port induction and produced 110 hp (82 kW) and 125 ft·lbf (170 Nm). The additional displacement was achieved by boring the 1.9 engine to 84.8 mm (3.339 in). It is the most refined CVH engine made, and continued to deliver excellent fuel economy, although due to the cars' increased weight, mileage is somewhat less than earlier models (usually mid-20s city, mid-30s highway). It is also the last CVH engine made and saw an end to production in the last of the 2004 Ford Focus LX/SE sedan and wagons.

• 2.0L Zetec – 130hp (97kW) – 135lb-ft (183N-m)
  - Standard on ZX3, ZX5, ZTS, and wagon models, and available in SE-model sedans through 2004.
  
  Ford Motor Company used the Zetec name on a variety of Inline-4 cylinder automobile engines. It was coined to replace "Zeta" on a range of 1.6 L to 2.0 L multi-valve engines introduced in 1991. The company used the name widely in European advertising and later introduced it to the North American market with the Contour.
  
  The Zetec name was so recognized that Ford decided to apply it to other high-tech four-cylinder engines. It is used across many engine types in Europe today even though the original Zeta design ended production in 2004. Ford also confusingly used the "Zetec" name for a trim level designation in certain markets.
  
  A Formula One engine produced for Ford by Cosworth was also badged as a Ford Zetec, although this was technologically unrelated. This engine (a 3.5 litre V8) was used by the Benetton team in 1994, and powered Michael Schumacher to his first World Championship title.

  The car featured a thoroughly reworked version of the 2.0 liter Zetec engine available in other Focus models. Developed in concert with Cosworth, this engine featured many advanced technologies. Included were a special aluminum cylinder head with enlarged intake ports, high compression pistons and forged connecting rods, piston oil squirters, solenoid operated variable camshaft timing on the intake cam, dual stage intake manifold, and a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust header.

• 2.0L Duratec – 136hp (101kW) – 136lb-ft (184N-m)
  - Standard on the (non-ST) 2005+ Focus.
  
  The Duratec 2.0 '993' is a 2.0 L (122 CID; 1998 cc) version built in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Bore is 87.5 mm (3.44 in) and stroke is 83.1 mm (3.27 in).
  
  It is used in the US/Argentinian Focus and the Brazilian Ford EcoSport. (European Fiesta ST, Ford Focus and Focus C-Max, Mondeo, S-Max, Transit and Galaxy use Duratec HE engines). On the 2007 Focus, output is 136 hp (101 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2007 Focus sold in the US states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME comes with the required PZEV emissions 20E version which produces 130 hp (97 kW) at 6000 rpm with 129 ft·lbf (175 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. The PZEV is available as an option in border states. The compression ratio for both versions is 10:1. It has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. The cylinders are lined with cast iron. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a one-piece cast crankshaft, and a cast aluminum or reinforced plastic intake manifold. It does not have variable valve timing. The power output is less than the Mazda version which does have VVT.
  
  The plastic intake manifold on early versions has a major fault due to poor quality materials. The manifold has swirlplates mounted on a square shaft at the aperture where it mounts to the cylinder head. Early 4 cylinder Duratec engines can be ruined when the swirlplates break off and enter a cylinder. Most cases are of single swirlplates but also the shaft can wear and break. Early signs of this fault are evidenced by a ticking noise emanating from the front of the engine. This can occur as early as 25K miles, with failure typically occurring after about 90K miles.

• 2.3L Duratec – 151hp (113kW) – 154lb-ft (209N-m)
  - Standard on the 2005-2007 Focus ST.
  
  The Duratec 23 is a 2.3 L (140 CID; 2261 cc) variant of the Mazda MZR 2.3 L engine. Bore is 3.44 inches (87.5 mm) and stroke is 3.70 inches (94 mm). It has an aluminum engine block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and a one-piece cast crankshaft.

Focus Transmission Specifications

• 5 speed MTX-75 manual
  
  The Ford MTX-75 (Manual TransaXle), is a 5-speed transmission developed by Ford Motor Company for its larger engined front wheel drive models. "75" refers to the distance in millimeters between the main and lay shafts.
  
  Debuting in 1992, the transmission was developed in tandem with the Zetec family of engines. The transmission is optimized for transferring larger levels of torque than the older iB-series unit used on the Fiesta and Escort models. Other features include the provision of equal length drive shafts (to combat torque steer) and synchromesh on reverse gear.
  
  The transmission was first used on the Zetec-engined Escort Mk V, but its proper intended application was on the Mondeo and its derivatives (the American Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique and the New Edge Mercury/Ford Cougar). It is also used on the 2.0 L gasoline and all diesel powered versions of the Focus.
  
  The main change to the unit was to cable operation in 1996 on the face-lifted Mondeo, as the rod-based linkage of the original unit attracted criticism for feeling vague and notchy.
  
  The open differential can be replaced by a plated or ATB Differential for motorsport use - Kaaz and Quaife offer suitable units.
  
  Though reliable for some, many full out race car drivers dislike them.

• 6 speed Getrag 285 Transverse manual (SVT)
  
  Getrag (sometimes written GETRAG) is a leading manufacturer of automobile manual transmissions. The company was founded on 1 May 1935 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Hermann Hagenmeyer as the Getriebe- und Zahnradfabrik Hermann Hagenmeyer AG ("Transmission and gear factory Hermann Hagenmeyer AG"). Today, the company is allied with the Dana Corporation, Volvo and the Ford Motor Company, but supplies transmissions to most auto manufacturers including General Motors, Daimler AG, Fiat, Porsche, BMW (Mini (BMW)), Toyota and the Volkswagen Group. Chief competitors include Aisin and ZF.
  
  Getrag recently entered into two new alliances with Ford and Chrysler to produce the Dual Clutch Powershift Transmission at two new plants in North America - one in Kokomo, Indiana and the other in Mexico; production will begin in 2008 for DCx (Tipton, IN), 2009 for Ford (Mexico) and then an additional DCx volume out of Mexico in 2010. The headquarters for the new division, Getrag Transmissions Corporation (or GTC), is located in Sterling Heights, MI.
  
  The Dual Clutch Transmission combines the advantages of a manual and an automatic transmission, and is more energy efficient than either. Shifting between gears will be unnoticeable to passengers. Two main versions will be produced: a "wet" clutch version which utilizes hydraulic fluid for shifting and a "dry" clutch version which uses electronic motors to control the clutch.

• 5 speed IB5 (CVH/SPI Engine only)
  
  The IB-series manual transmissions are a series of manual transaxles produced by Ford in Europe for its front wheel drive automobiles.
  
  The original version (IB4) was a fully synchronised 4-speed introduced in 1976 for the first generation Ford Fiesta. Following the introduction of the third generation Escort, a five speed version (IB5) was introduced in 1982. The ultimate version is IB5+, manufactured only in Brazil, that fits engines as big as 2.0 liter.
  
  The biggest change to the unit over its production run was for the introduction of the Focus in 1998, when the rod based shifting linkage was changed to cable operation, and the adoption of a hydraulic clutch mechanism.
  
  Earlier versions of the unit have one weak area; the differential bearings have a tendency to break up after around 80,000 miles. If left unchecked, this problem can result in the driveshaft grinding away the gearbox casing. The first sign of this problem is the speedometer ceasing to function.

• 4 speed 4F27E automatic (Zetec, Duratec, SPI)
  
  The 4F27E is a 4-speed automatic transaxle for transverse engine use. It was jointly developed by Ford Motor Company and Mazda, which calls the unit the FN4A-EL.
  
  The 4F27E is a 4-speed automatic with an added overdrive and is completely electronic, with all shifts controlled by solenoids. It has a four-element torque converter that includes a torque converter clutch and geartrain with two planetary gearsets, a transfer-shaft gear final drive, and a differential.
